The Internet Archive is seeking an experienced and skilled digital video archiving systems engineer to join our TV News Archive team.

Your primary responsibilities will include setting up and managing systems, system monitoring and troubleshooting/problem solving, and maintaining recording hardware such as satellite dishes, specialized cables, and over-the-air tuners. This is a full-time position that offers the opportunity to contribute to a vital project that preserves, and makes accessible, a wealth of TV News material from the United States and around the world.

Key Responsibilities:

  • System Monitoring and Optimization: Monitor video recording systems for performance issues and system errors. Analyze system logs and performance metrics to proactively address potential problems. Develop and execute strategies to enhance the reliability and efficiency of our services.

  • Network Management: Configure and optimize network settings to support video recording operations. Monitor and analyze network traffic to identify and resolve packet loss and latency issues. Work with the Ops team to implement network performance improvements and ensure reliable data transmission.

  • Hardware Maintenance: Install, calibrate, and maintain recording hardware, including satellite dishes, specialized cables, and over-the-air tuners. Perform regular diagnostics and preventative maintenance to ensure optimal performance of all equipment. Troubleshoot hardware failures and coordinate repairs or replacements as needed.

  • Development of New Capabilities: Collaborate with the team to develop and integrate new features into our archiving process. This may include improving transcription and translation services, as well as leveraging both in-house software and third-party services to make our archived video more accessible and useful to users.

  • Continuous Improvement: Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in video processing technologies and archiving methods. Recommend and implement enhancements to our processes and tools to ensure that our archive remains cutting-edge and highly functional.

  • Technical Support: Document technical procedures and updates to maintain a comprehensive knowledge base.

Qualifications:

  • Extensive Experience in Video Signal Processing: Demonstrated expertise in managing and processing video streams, with a strong understanding of various video standards, formats, tools, and software.

  • Hardware Proficiency: Hands-on experience with video recording hardware, including satellite dishes, specialized cables, and over-the-air tuners.

  • Network Management: Proven experience in network configuration, packet analysis, and performance optimization.

  • Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to identify potential issues early and develop effective solutions. Experience setting up and managing monitoring and reporting systems for video archiving.

  • Innovation and Development: Experience in developing and implementing new capabilities in video archiving, such as transcription, translation, or other enhancements that improve the utility of archived video content.

  • Attention to Detail: Highly organized and meticulous.

  • Team Collaboration: Excellent communication skills and a collaborative mindset, with the ability to work closely with other team members and stakeholders to achieve project goals.

  • Proactive Attitude: A proactive approach to improving processes and systems, with a focus on making our services more reliable and efficient.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of video encoding/decoding standards and practices.

  • Experience with network protocols and packet loss mitigation techniques.

  • Experience with cloud-based archiving solutions.

  • Familiarity with scripting languages for automation and data analysis (e.g. JavaScript, Python, Bash).

  • Familiarity with container technologies (e.g. Docker, podman).

  • Familiarity with machine learning and AI-driven video processing tools.

  • Previous experience in a similar role within a media or archival organization.
